Kolad: The Emotional Outing

It's been a long time !!! Post Alibag I didn't have any travel diary material. A dream trip I did have in January of this year, but it is good if that stays in draft forever.

July 2017. Emotions were at their peak. Heart filled with memories but void of the presence. Though we all have to accept the status quo and move on, as we can't stay in the past forever. May be everything shall stay the same for there is no Goodbye. Just a new Beginning. And what an adventurous beginning it's going to be. River Rafting.

After the TheGoa trip, we did have a short trip in the caves. But that was just a type of prequel before this main outing. The timing was perfect. Usual suspects rolled in giving a decent head count. Some heads were not taken for obvious reasons. Hence the game was On.

After the emotional night, I got up the next day with some hangover. Starting my usual morning things. We were suppose to board the train in the afternoon. And still meeting time, packing, what to take and what not to, who boarding from where, where to meet; all such questions were pending. May be too much planning didn't come out as it is expected from it, after the last time's experience. So this time it was going to be extempore. Live and work upon as it comes.

We had made a list of adventure sports to be done once before we die. One got ticked out in January. Another one was (Paragliding) suppose to happen in March as per the original schedule. But the hangover of Goa was so brutal that no one could dare think of a trip together. So it was a complete dry summer. Things weren't too good in work front as well with some happy faces but many sad ones. So one day suddenly we decided, if not the air one, why not try the one in water from our list. River Rafting in Kolad. Nearby destination, adventure and it also came at a perfect time. So we made a group, a new one in WhatsApp, to ask people who wants to join in for the same. The regular Yes, No, Maybe, I am Busy etc answers started coming in. Plus the biggest irritating part in all this is, inspite of having a group, people will prefer replying on personal chats. To some extent it is understandable for girls, but even boys doing the same is quite weird. Anyways these things come in package in all picnic plans. Just the faces change.

Niki and me met a friend of mine who had been to Kolad. We took as much details as needed from the source. I remember we were in office and the moment we were in receipt of the details, we both came to my desk and were trying to check the website. But it being workstation, due to some plugin issues the videos weren't loading properly. So I asked Niki to check the same from her phone. Kishan too was there with us. But the Moto was not responding. (Speaking of which, One Plus Five seems to be the need of the hour.) So we went to her desk and checked out on her laptop. It gave a rough idea of the expenses we would be incurring in the trip. My other friend was saying that we should try for weekdays, as that would come very cheap. But that option wasn't feasible. So Niki posted the proposed trip cost in the WhatsApp group to get the final head count of people who are okay with it. Some people were trying to join in voluntarily. Though we didn't say anything but chances of their joining was not possible that we knew from the start and also from the queries which they were raising.

After all the pre planning issues, In and Out, finally 6 people agreed to go. Niki, Ajinkya, Kishan and Rahul from the Goa sqaud and Manoj for the first time (For Me). Unlike previous outing, this time the excitement as I mentioned above was a bit less. We were busy in farewell, so all of a sudden it use to click 'Oh we haven't done train bookings, shit we have to do the search of hotel and stays in kolad'. After the message of dates & rough cost being shared in the group, there was a thumbs up across the board for night stay and even the dates, 8th & 9th July, which were freezed. But what next was still not decided.

So our next step was to book train tickets, to and fro, so we can be sure that the trip is actually On. As uptil now there were talks and talks but no action. The going ticket from Dadar to Kolad, we got confirmed and it was done easily. But I messed up while booking the return ticket. It was clear as day that the train is till Diva and yet I booked the ticket till Panvel. I was getting a feeling that something is weird in this, but exactly what that I didn't process on that day. Only when the next day my team member pointed out, I realized my comedy. Hence I immediately cancelled the ticket but didn't get anything as refund. As the cancellation charges were higher than our ticket prices. Later we booked the correct one but it was in Waiting List. Assuming non season, we knew this will get confirmed.

The best part in train booking was, Niki didn't knew the difference between Normal Express Trains and Passenger Train. We also didn't tell her in the start what is the exact difference. Though she did found out on her own later. As regards to passenger train. we knew there might be situation in train, as my team member had told me, that though you have confirm tickets you may come across people who are regular travelers who won't budge to vacant your reserved seats. All boys were mentally prepared but Niki had her own plans to ensure she will get her seat, come what may.

The D-Day finally arrived. Group was buzzing to confirm where to meet. Since our train was at 3:40pm, I suggested to meet up at 2PM, Dadar Station. The early the better. We had no clue which platform the train was going to arrive, plus it was a passenger train. So better we are in our positions, before time. Everyone decided to board from the starting destination, hence as per each ones place and distance from Dadar, people planned to leave. After the meeting time was finalized I packed my bag. It was about time. Had a quick lunch and left.

I reached Dadar as per schedule. Niki also reached at the same point from her end. We decided to wait in the ticket counter on the FOB. After going inside the counter we came across Manoj who was already waiting for us. Rahul too had arrived early and was buying some snacks, which we later left in the train. This is one thing we need to note for our future outing. Even in Goa, plenty of snacks were left in the end. As everyone have their own choices, it is better if each one brings what they prefer so we don't have to open a distribution counter in the end.

Out of 6, 4 people were there now in the huddle. Kishan too had reached Dadar. Only Ajinkya was left. I went to a newspaper counter and asked him on which platfrom shall Dadar-Ratnagiri Passenger train arrive. He confirmed that the train shall arrive on Platform No 9. So we updated Ajinkya to reach this platform directly and we all headed towards the train to check out our seats.

After the long walk on FOB, we reached the destination. Kishan was already waiting there, which made our head count 5. Our bogie was attached in the start, just behind the engine. So this was another long walk. I had the ticket print out. So was walking ahead to check In. Extra care had to be taken of Rahul as we had only one copy of the return ticket and that was with Rahul. We all entered the bogie, kept our luggage and booked our seats. Niki took the window seat on the right side, I was in the middle and Kishan on the left. While Rahul took the window on the right side. As we all were settling, Ajinkya too reached. He took the place besides Rahul in the middle and Manoj sat on the corner. Now the quorum was full.

Except Rahul, everyone was in picnic mood. We were clicking pictures, talking stuff of related or unrelated topics. Four were ex-Radius and two were current Radius. In snacks, Rahul had also brought Vada Pav. I had my lunch at 12Pm and it was already 3:30. So I was hungry. Therefore I asked permission to start eating snacks. When I was relishing the Vada Pav I was repeatedly kept telling to all, this is home made. With our snack break, the train also started moving. Kishan was given the task of keeping a track of Stations. Also he had some App wherein he had kept our PNR Number of the Return ticket. So once the ticket gets confirmed he shall be getting a notification along with our berth numbers and bogie details.

Train time was relaxing. The entire month had too much on the menu for us. So today was the time to relax and breathe. We were initially talking, later tried watching Kong. In the middle some songs were also on, when the movie got boring. Bhakarwadi was there for company as well. Kishan too was into his phone. While on the other side, Ajinkya and Manoj were doing some R&D in 4-5 mobile phones. Rahul was having a nap. Before the train had started, Manoj had purchased Playing cards in the train. So now to entertain themselves they were doing some magic tricks and clicking pictures by using those cards. In this, suddenly they remembered a game popularly known as 5 - 3 - 2. They couldn't come to a consensus on the rules that need to be followed to play the game. So they turned around and asked rules of the game to us. I use to play, but I didn't knew the rules now. So it was the turn of our google to reply. Niki was explaining them the entire game brick by brick, all the rules. But she was explaining all from her Window seat. Her voice was so loud, though she didn't realise that, the guys from that end were almost scared. People from 2-3 seats ahead were also staring at them. Rahul was hiding his face in the window. Ajinkya was in the middle so he went below a bit in hiding. Manoj had no place to hide, so he was just staring at her looking at us and then looking down. Totally priceless expression. And when Niki came to know the scenario, she started shouting more loudly "A 5 - 3 - 2, 5 - 3 - 2, 5 - 3 - 2" in the tune of "Garam Bangdya Garam Bangdya" from the movie Elizabeth Ekadashi. Manoj was like "Nako Nako we don't want to play". This truly was the highlight of the train journey.

Being a passenger train, people were allowed to board even in the reservation bogies. There is no TC visiting the train. We were warned in advance that we might come across some local thugs and even though we might be having a confirm ticket, we might have to give in. As mentioned earlier, Niki was prepped up for such situation. Others hadn't thought about it. But thankfully nothing of that type happened in our journey, both, while going and also when coming back. Of all the rumors and hype around the passenger train one thing I noticed was, it is not bad at all for a short journey. The train was also On Time. So we reached our destination on the scheduled time. The only problem we faced was while getting down from the train. The platforms being small, technically the train should halt two times. However that's not the case in here. The engine of the train goes way ahead of the platform and then halts. Hence we had to jump on the tracks and then walk uptill the platform. To our luck, it was twilight. Therefore the road was visible. We had reached Kolad Station. As soon as the entire head count checked in on the platform, we clicked a picture. And now all the adventures shall begin.

We collected ourselves and walked down the stairs of the platform towards the main road. There was no auto available outside and also it was pitch dark. Some other groups which had come from the same train, went by taking lift from random transport vehicles. We were trying to locate the location on Google Maps, as the owner had shared his location on WhatsApp the previous night post our discussion for Veg or Non Veg menu. Since location being a remote one Jio wasn't working. Manoj had Airtel in working condition and it had 4G too. So Niki shared the link with him and we were trying to trace the same. Initial plan was to go walking, since we knew this location was nearer from station, though it was very far away from the actual rafting point. The previous one which we had planned had Swimming pool, Volley ball as add on and was closer to the rafting point but that was very far from station. Since our train arrival timing was late in the evening, the owner suggested us to select the place closer to the station. As soon as the distance was mapped, it showed the timing by walking somewhere above an hour. Manoj looked at the ETA and then looked at Niki and shouted something in South Indian accent saying No for walking. Niki was like "A hadd hadd hadd, tu majha mitra nahi aahes, ha majha mitra nahi aahe".

In the meantime I came across a small kiosk for snacks and tea. Tea anytime any moment is always welcome, condition being it has to taste good. We ordered 4, as Niki doesn't have tea and I guess Kishan too opted out. Well surprisingly it did taste good hence another round was in order. Now that no vehicle was available and walking was out of scope, we connected with the rafting guy explaining him our situation and asked if he could send over any transportation. He said he shall send his auto person to fetch us all and we also discussed how much we had to pay so there won't be any conflict. We were trying to ease ourselves in the small waiting area of Kolad station. We were playing catch-catch too with the smiley ball. It had been sometime after our first call to the owner for sending an Auto. So Manoj made another call as his phone had powerful network. From here, started the clashes between the hotel people and Manoj. When Manoj called them up, the cottage guys replied saying "we have told everything to Nikita Madam." So he quietly digested those words and passed on the phone to Niki. After few minutes of this call, the automan finally arrived.

A 20-25 minute drive it was from the station. The automan halted at a place that was a sort off dead end. Nothing was visible ahead as there were no street lights. In the morning we realised that it was a farm. The automan then guided us from the small walk way till the cottage. We paid his dues and proceeded to check in. Niki met the owner and we were guided to our rooms. Surrounding area was quite good. Some groups were having dinner while some where relaxing on the swings tied between the trees. There was a bunch of cycles too. We walked on the narrow path between the trees towards our cottage. Light on, bags down and bums on the bed. HEAVEN.

Room was pretty good and clean. Washroom was spacious as well as clean. Water available all the time. We had good amount of pillows and blankets for the night. And no sighting of dinosaur. So in short a perfect space for all of us to actually relax. There were a total of 6 beds. 5 were in line while one separately kept adjacent to the door. Kishan opted the separate one. He was happy in the start but regretted later as there was no fan above the bed. Rahul took the first one nearest to the door, he kept his phone on charging as the electric board which was nearby his bed and slept. I kept my bag near Kishans bed and selected the 2nd one besides Rahul. While Manoj and Ajinkya took the corner two beds. Middle one was separate and not joined with any other bed, hence Niki got that one. We had AC, but that wasn't necessary. As we were talking on random topics the cottage guy came and reminded us dinner is served. So one by one we all started freshening up. Everyone was hungry after the journey. As few were still left to freshen up I just went ahead with Niki to check out the dinner menu. To my delight, there was chicken and Egg masala. I was hoping the others wrap up soon and reach the spot so we can start the dinner and enjoy the full menu instead of having the leftovers. Fortunately the cottage guys were refilling the bowls of food items. So we got a good amount of everything. It wasn't a typical outside restaurant food. Normal village food, and it did taste good. Manoj had his fast, so he asked for hot milk. At first they weren't listening to him as they didn't recognize him. Later when he said Nikita madam ke group ke saath hoon. So finally they agreed. Also we asked for crocin as Rahul was on bed and he was having headache, if my memory is correct.

After dinner we were just roaming outside. Me and Niki went to the cottage guy to confirm the next days schedule for rafting. He said Breakfast shall be ready from 630 AM. We will have to make our move as early as possible. We told him to ask the same automan to be there tomorrow also as this travel is going to be a long one. After his confirmation, we were done with our discussions. Now we had this only long night with us. Surely, except one, no one had plans to sleep. Adventures were restricted for we were in the jungle. So either indoor games or walk in the park outside. After the chat with the cottage guy we were going towards the trees where all were relaxing. As we reached there I saw Kishan on the ground with one leg and one hand up in the air. Ajinkya had come to assist him, but Kishan was insisting he is fine and was trying to get up. That time we had realized Kishan was trying to sit on the rope swing but had a great fall. Now, just to avoid embarrassment he was shouting "Main Theek Hoon" and trying to get up as Ajinkya was giving him a hand.

All the swings were booked. So Kishan gave me his with a warning to be careful as there is too much imbalance in those ropes. Manoj was lying on one of the swing and was engrossed in his cell phone. Hence Ajinkya offered Niki place in his swing. Then something happened what is the Best Moment of this Trip. Niki was trying to get on board. Ajinkya was sitting on one corner and was trying to provide the swing some balance so she could make it comfortably. I had adjusted myself somehow on the imbalanced swing and was watching Nikis climb to glory. Kishan was standing besides my swing to check in case I have the same fall. Then in a fraction of second something happened. She came, She Saw and She Dhadam sort off moment. A moment which took couple of seconds to just sink in and then everyone just bursted out laughing.

Niki was trying to get on the swing with both her legs atop leaving no chance to balance in case the swing decides to throw you down. Normally we keep one leg on the ground until our balance body stabilizes after which we pick up the 2nd leg. She directly went up. The swing was shaking too much inspite of Ajinkya trying to balance it from the other end. I was watching all this while trying to ensure I don't lose my own balance on the swing. Manoj was in his own world, totally unaware of the surroundings. Finally, Niki had made the climb. But she didn't knew what was in store in the next moment. After the climb she tried to sit comfortably but the swing just didn't love her and took a sharp turn throwing the entire Nikita on the ground.

On my end I was wondering what should I do now. Shall I laugh or shall I ask her how she is? Ajinkya was watching from the above while Manoj still in his own world as Niki tried to get back on her own feet. Still sleeping on my swing, somehow in the thinking process I managed to ask her, "Are you hurt". She said No and was trying to wipe the mud, when she suddenly realised it was wet. Immediately she started shouting "Chikal Chikal Chikal". By this time I had got down from my swing and  got near hers. Ajinkya and Kishan too were there. Seeing us together Manoj finally came in our world and the first word that went in his ears were "Chikal Chikal." He thought there must be mud near Nikis swing so he offered her place on his saying "Mag Ikde Yeun Bass". Niki, in her shouting spree, started running towards the cottage to get herself cleaned. We did have a short laugh, after which we all went towards the cottage.

In the room we were literally talking about it again and again and were laughing our hearts out. The best moment was when Manoj explained Kishans fall, "Sabse bhaari kishan ka tha, niche gira nahi uske pehle jor se chila diya bhai main theek hoon." Tired of too much laughter we all were resting and catching our breath and thinking what to do next.

It wasn't midnight yet. So we decided to play cards. Manoj had purchased a pack in train. So that was now going to be put to use. Songs were on in the background. Cards were distributed and we started playing MendiCoat. Head count was 6, hence there was no problem in team formation. The game was good though not like the one we had in Alibaugh. Back then, my team was able to give a good amount of coats to the opponents. But this time it was on equal terms, sometimes we making a face saving exit sometimes the opponent.

Cards were entertaining to a certain extent but after few rounds we all started feeling the dullness. Clock was reading past midnight. So all the lively people decided to have a walk outside and sit in the open. There weren't any stories to be told as such. Kishan had ordered his beer. Paid a good amount over and above the MRP. It was raining, a bit chilled so old songs was just what the doctor ordered. Coincidentally I have prepared a playlist in YouTube by saving songs under different categories. Some old, some new, some old wine in new bottles etc. Manoj was in awe of the knowledge and database Kishan had about movies. When Niki said Kishan has around 6000 songs in his phone, Manoj was like I came to know today there actually are that much amount of songs. I was surprised too when I played an old mash up song and Kishan literally guessed the singers name. Though I hear that song daily, until then I never knew or saw the singers name. On one occasion Manoj gave a hint of some song and Kishan almost gave the entire portfolio of the song and the movie.

And so the night went on. I went on playing my playlist. Niki found rackets and so she was playing badminton with Manoj. Since it was raining heavily on the outside they had no option but to play in the cottage. Talks on music, songs, badminton filled in the next few hours until 2AM. I had a plan in back of mind that atleast 2-2.5 hours sleep was necessary so I can be in sound mind and awake for rafting. Manoj was feeling sleepy. So we started taking baby steps towards our rooms.

Rahul was already in his dreamworld. And Manoj followed suit. Me, Kishan, Ajinkya and Niki were having talks about one thing or another. I had set alarm for around 5 so could wake up early, freshen up and be ready for the adventure. Another adventure before the rafting was planned too. In the first cottage which we had booked we were suppose to get pool and volley ball. Plan was to play AabaDubi. But due to last minute change in location we didn't get that place. And hence the plan for the games too were gone. So we continued our talks till around 3:30AM and then finally dozed off.

Exactly around 5:30 I woke up with a start, Was searching my phone to check the time. Saw Niki awake and asked her and she confirmed the same. Then one by one we all started getting up to get ready for R-Day. The cottage people turned out like only talks and no action. Though they stressed upon, the previous night, the breafast timing as 6:30AM and the leaving time. They themselves were running behind schedule by an hour. In the meantime Niki and me were set and good to go. Hence we went outside and were playing badminton in the backyard. This area had all the ropes and wires hanging around. It was meant for the complimentary activities in the cottage like commando bridge and monkey crawling types. Hence this was acting as a big hurdle in our game. Everytime we hit the shuttle high it use to hit one these wires and break our rally. It was good to play the game almost after a decade. The breakfast was served, after an hour of fighting hunger. I got my all time favorite breakfast item, Poha and Tea. Relished it. And finally we were about to head towards the main activity.

We inquired about our automan. Cottage boy said he shall be coming outside near the road. So we started leaving. On the gates I saw the cycle stand. This was also allowed in the package, but unfortunately we did not have that much time that we could enjoy all the additional benefits involved. We reached the outer road where the automan was waiting for us. There we realised that alongwith our 6 pack, there was an another group of 4 who will be joining us in our auto. So now we had to squeeze ourselves for all to fit in. Villagers were innovative. They had kept a plastic stool inside the auto rickshaw to take an additional passenger. This innovation came as a boon for us as Niki could sit on the same. Though it was back breaking for her. Ajinkya and Kishan were window folks so they had kept their hands on the window to ensure Niki doesn't have a fall. Auto kicked off. Now games and all was not possible in here. So we were having some general talks. Manoj was telling about his dreams he was having for past few days about Kolad and rafting. The last night fall was also on the menu for some laughs.

We knew this was a long trip, but 1.5 hour long was not I had thought about. The other 4 guys had started talking about some mode of taking pictures. Manoj had brought a phone specifically for this purpose. So we had own source for clicking pictures. The previous group from whom I had discussed about this trip they did get some pics and videos with the help of organizers but that wasn't too much interesting. These people in auto were like the raft guys have cameras. They will take 2K from us and at the end of the ride they will be giving us the memory card. So their proposal was we will tell the raft guys that ours is one group. So he will take pictures & videos. And later we can transfer all the content and divide the cost between us which shall come around 200 per head. We all thought it to be reasonable so we agreed to it. Apart from this there wasn't much happening in the auto. I was wondering when shall we be finally reaching as this TamTam ride was giving a full body massage by aggravating the pain pressure points.

Finally after ages it felt, we were seeing some water. The auto halted at a spot. We thought we were finally there. But the automan only took the other 4 guys and asked us to wait in the auto. May be went to drop them to some other drop point. I used this halt to take a walk, stretch and relax. Sun was pouring. And we were hoping for some rains. The automan came after 10 minutes and took us bit ahead to our drop point.

And here we were. Rafting is basically done on the Kundalika river. Water flow depends mainly on the dam. Since the dam gates open in the morning, water flow is quite good at that time. The total stretch is around 12-13 kms which gives a good 2-3 hours of river experience. Safe, adventurous, calorie burning, but total fun. Just follow the rules and the water is yours.

We were first required to register our names and sign the waiver forms. Though I knew what it was still just out of curiosity read the entire form. Then we were asked to pick up a safety jacket as per our size, a helmet and a paddle to row the raft. We did some photo session in the new dress up. The rafting people then allotted us a guide. All guides were either Nepalis or from N-E side.

Our guide took charge of the team. He introduced himself and had asked us to do the same, I guess. Then he gave a brief idea of the river, its name. He had given a peculiar chant that everyone was shouting around, 'Kundalika Mata Ki Jai'. Though women are given 3rd class treatment in the country but for invoking emotions she becomes Mata. For us the chant was just another reason to shout out and get the picnic mood going. So we too joined in. After the JaiJaikar, he started telling basic things that need to be taken care off when we shall be in the waters. Keep your jackets intact, always wear your helmet types etc etc. The best part was when we were giving different names to paddle like danda and he was insisting on calling it as paddle. I was now getting restless and couldn't wait until I reached the raft.

After 10 long minutes, his lecture ended and we moved towards our raft. Good thing, it was a small one. Hence it was only group in the raft and the guide. The guide further started telling about the raft, how to sit in it, what part of the raft to hold upon during the waves, how to duck when the tide will be higher. Then he started a long para on the types of rowing we have to follow when we will be in water. On his call we have to take the paddle either forward or backward in the waters. His call use to depend on the water currents. Then he gave the call which when uttered, we have to stop rowing and hold the paddle on our thighs. Also there was a unique way to hold the paddle between the thumb and hand portion. I remember forgetting that and Manoj shouting from the other end, "Siddhu asa pakad (indicating towards his thumb) paddle." The guide also said not to paddle without or beyond my instructions.

I have a unique memory basically. So by the time his last set of instruction was completed, I had no idea what the first line was. Any which ways we were all in this together so why put pressure on something which is already in less quantity. That's the best part of adventure sports. Security measures are kept in place assuming certain scenarios where things might go wrong. So one can take a leap of faith by trusting the same. It's all about how you manage your adrenaline glands. I know this might sound theoretical but I am just preparing myself for Bunjee Jumping at Rishikesh post seeing the videos.

The squad was finally on board. As per the suggestion given by the auto guys we had a word with the guide regarding clicking pictures. The guide did nod his head which we assumed as approval. So we all picked up our raft and got it water bound.

I took my position at Right-wing on the raft. While Manoj was going to handle the left. Ajinkya was going to manage the  movements from the Right Mid while Kishan took charge of left mid. Niki was incharge of Right Back and Rahul was supposed to keep an eye from the left. The guide took the position of Sweeper.  These positions were taken on first come basis. So some got what they wanted while some had to adjust themselves in the remaining positions.

We were all set to kick off but the guide wasn't happy with the positions. May be he didn't want me to play forwards and hence brought me back at Right back and gave the forward charge to Niki from the Right Wing position. I quietly made the shuffle and took charge of the new position. There was some argument going on in the background. I didn't pay attention but overheard one line where the guy said to the organisers, "Main pehli Baar Nahi aaya hoon. Is boat main already 10 hai and aap log mujhe wahan adjust kar rahe ho. Ya toh dusra boat main bithau ya toh Mera paisa return Karo." Though I ignored it, but wasn't aware that it was going to impact us. Organizers decided to put him in our raft. So with he coming at Right Back position, now I got shifted to Right Defence Mid. The guide could sense some imbalance in the raft for as there were 4 on the right side and 3 on the left. So I was asked again to take command of the Right Wing (Which originally I had chosen for me) thus removing Right Defence Mid from the equation. And Niki was asked to manage the proceedings as Centre Forward. Like all the forwards in the world she had the luxury of not being part of the creation process (No paddle exercise). Now things were in order and the guide shouted Forward (As paddle Instruction) and the wheels were set in motion for a memorable journey.

Alongside us there were many other rafts too. All souls in it were fully charged up, excited. Waving each other for no reasons. Slowly slowly we started sailing. AJ was constantly complaining from behind that I wasn't paddling. I am like Kar toh Raha hoon. In the start it was just warm up. The guide testing our knowledge about the theory he had imparted in all of us sometime ago. So we were just doing rounds in one small area front and back. After the few trial runs we actually started going forward. The thing which was troubling me was he hadn't started recording in his camera which is suppose to be hanging on his helmet. So we asked the guide about the recording part and suddenly he was being reluctant. He was under the assumption that we aren't carrying cash with us in the raft. Manoj had brought his wallet in a small bag which he had buried in his life jacket. So this assurance that he will be paid finally made him take out the camera.

With the camera finally On, the moments were being captured live. We had now come at quite a distance from the starting point. Now the guide decided to try one more lesson from his book. When the waves are high, that time every one should duck themselves in the raft. Niki was sitting between me and Manoj. And she was already sitting in the lower side of raft. As soon as the guide asked us to duck in, me and Manoj went down immediately. In that action, madam got a hit as she got sandwiched between the two of us.

As we continued further the river was starting to get naughty now. We had started experiencing the waves on regular basis. The guides' instructions were changing constantly from forward to backward to hold or duck as per the flow of water. One thing I really feel like appreciating about the organizers of all these adventure sports. Almost all of them, be it rafting, kayaking, paragliding/sailing, bunjee jumping etc, are all based on the forces of nature; Air, Wind, Water. We have to assume that these elements will behave as we want them to in order to have a good day at office for them and a successful day out for their customers. That itself is like playing with fire, but may be that's how the universe works. Pad up and keep your arsenal full for the wars that might come in your way. Not all we win, (Like the popular saying Valar Morghulis) but until you survive it has to be lively. With all these thoughts back in the mind and body exercise on with the paddling, came our first halt and our first tryst with real water.

A rope is tied around the edge of the raft which is meant to provide support and hold upon if some one accidentally falls in the water. Now the task for us was to lock our legs on the internal partitions of the raft, hold upon the rope which is tied on the edges of the raft and take a dip in the water. The trick in here was that it was a kind of an exercise which we do in gym; crunches. So in a sitting position going down taking a dip in the water by merely putting your head portion in it and coming up again, time for being in water depending upon each ones capacity to hold your breath. Being on the obese side all my life, this was one hell of a task for me. The problem with me was, as I was on the front side of the raft I wasn't having proper place to lock both of my legs. So due to this, my left leg did get locked. But its right counterpart was in air.  Plus the pair being long, it was a bit uncomfortable too to hold myself and, later, pick up my whole body up from the water. I was aware but I still went in. Why worry about the consequences and miss the fun. As he said 'Down', with all others I went down too. Allowed few seconds in it, the water flowing on your face and some of it entering through the ears and nose cavity. When the body started sending out signals for oxygen, mind gave the orders to come Up. Now this being the 1st dip ,and I too hadn't gone very deep, I was able to come up. Though my right leg was suspended in the air while I was coming up, but somehow managed and came at my original position to catch some breath. Now when the guide said down for the second time, I thought of going more deep to feel the water. I knew that going down isn't a task, it's about how I'll come up again. For the time being I chose to ignore that thought process and enjoyed the few moments. As soon as oxygen signal were On, I brought my head up and started coming up. This time the right leg was successful in tipping me over. Instead of me coming up, my right leg crossed its barriers and came to a height from where it was difficult for my locked leg to hold upon. Due to this, body did a full 360 degree rotation and I was completely thrown out in the water by myself from the raft. Though, the life jacket won't let you sink. But I had my hands on the rope of the raft, trying to catch some breath while managing a smile on the face. The guide who was suppose to come to my rescue but was clicking my pictures instead of pulling me up. Others, once saw me at safety, surely were having a laugh. Finally after the guide was satisfied he had captured enough of me being drowned, pulled me back.

Further as we went inside the river, the waves had increased their intensity as per the classification provided by the guide in the start. Shouting in the top our voices had become routine now. The guide had told Niki to lie on the front end of the raft same way like the unicorns are carved in the front end of ship. Also for sometime we both exchanged places as she wanted to row the paddle. But there was imbalance due to which guide asked to restore the status quo. Now even AJ wasn't complaining, that meant that my rowing was correct. And most importantly, when we were  reaching the rafting point the suryavanshi was in his full power. But as we were almost mid way in the rafting journey Indra had been successful in using his Vajra and had pierced through the clouds thus creating a perfect atmosphere.

Now the next task was, everyone had to stand on the edge of the raft. The drill was easy. You had to lock your paddle in one of the partition of raft to get a firm hold and stand on the edge by taking its support. I was still in the hangover of GolantiUdi in water so chose not to. One fear in mind was being on the heavier side, if I stand by taking support of the paddle locked in the raft. If, and yes it's a hypothetical IF, I some how end up piercing the raft in a wrong way and if I give a vent for the air to come out it's going to be a doomsday for all. So except me everyone had done their part and the first set of photo session was done. Since Niki was besides me I had one company alongside, even though she was standing on the edge of raft. Though I feared, but the excitement never dies. Then comes one voice from inside, not like Sukhi of Rang De Basanti, Jo Karna hai aaj hich Karna hai, it's now or never. And then Jai Bhawani Jai Shivaji bol diya and I was up on the edge. So for the next set of photos I was up too.

Other rafts were passing by but neither of them we saw taking halts or doing activities as we did. May be our guide was kind of cooperative and allowed us total fun in the journey. With this thought it was time for another activity. I always had the dream of just lying on the surface of the water still and looking towards the sky. But swimming is not my area, so though I use to try in water parks by holding onto my breath. But that was never satisfying. Our next activity was kind of like this. We all were told to enter the water and lock our foot in the rope on the edge of raft. And just lie on the surface of the water. This was first time I realized that the thing which we were wearing could actually make us float in the water. I was thoroughly enjoying this. We all were holding each others hand in case someone starts floating away. I being on the balloon side had already started floating away from the pack. In the pictures clicked by the guide, there is one group in the frame and me. And it is evident. Not sure whether I was enjoying so I was letting myself go or my body was floating on its own. But a memorable moment it was. We did break away from the pack and were floating near and around the boat. I tried not to venture out much in the waters and was closest to the boat. But was enjoying the feeling that the life jacket actually works and I am floating on the surface.

As it was time to move ahead, now the task was to get back on board. I tried once trying to pull myself up, but in vain. The guide use to hold the shoulder area of our life jacket and in one go use to pull us back on the raft. I wonder how that single pasli guide managed to bring overweight like me also up in one go. We had to try 2-3 times before getting someone up.

All were now on board completely wet. And icing on cake, it started raining. We took few seconds to catch our breath and then again started the forward backward motion. Dashing the waves, screaming, cheering. Feeling the rain  water kissing our faces with the wind blowing and sending a chill. This was turning out to be one hell of an experience. The ghosts of Goa were being buried at last. The guide now had handed over the camera in our hands. Manoj was too much excited regarding the camera and already planned to take one. The waves were done now. The adjectives which the guide had used to describe them didn't seem to live upto that expectation. I, honestly, never realised when so much of the waves did we experience. But as such we all were happy with whatever was going on so we weren't bothered to prepare a checklist of what we got and we didn't. As the river was flowing gently, now came the event that I would say was a highlight of the journey apart from paddling. The guide had halted the raft now and asked us to jump in the water. It was now time to swim, float, jump in the water.

Everyone took the opportunity and threw themselves in the water. I was the last one to go so the guide had given me the rope which was tied to the raft, incase if anyone wants to comeback. I had tied the rope in my hand. Manoj, Rahul and Ajinkya made the optimum use of this moment. All the straight jumps, reverse jumps, on the count jumps, shooting those videos, the deadpool poses. Kishan was in water but we had to be keep his track for he wasn't wearing his specks. The other guy who was an extra in our group also had fun in his own way. I wonder how did he manage to have a peaceful time as he wasn't with his own pack. But the good part for us was he wasn't a pain in our ass, so we weren't that concerned about the same. The guide was clicking pictures from the raft. He clicked individual pictures, group pictures, videos which surely was a great assistance for us. At the end of the day we had over 5GB data of pictures and videos.

The three swimmer boys were wandering away from the boat. Niki and Kishan were a bit ahead of them. I was crashing myself on the raft now and then and waiting for someone to pull me up. The outside guy was the first to go in the raft. It was a bit dark now as the rains were pouring quiet heavily. I asked the guide to pull me in as now I was done with the waters. The outside guy had been successful in pulling up Kishan. But we weren't able to get Niki up. Hence the guide finally intervened, and pulled Niki out from the water as we take out dry fruit from sheera or kheer. I had also pulled the rope inside. Now the swimmer guys were still far away and the guide was calling in for everyone as we had to move ahead. Manoj was asking to throw the rope. I couldn't throw as he was still far away from the raft. Hence I was waiting for them fall ahead so I could lend them the rope to pull them in. After sometime when they were at a fair distance from the raft, I threw the rope. It fell in place and the other three also were back in the raft. As soon as Manoj reached near the raft, he was jokingly telling me "Mala mahit aahe tujhi chal hoti mhanun tu aamhal rashi det navhtas".

The journey had been now over 2 hours. Still the last part of rowing was to go. As we started back 1-2 rafts were there alongside us. Me and Manoj gave a call for race and started rowing as fast as possible to take on the ladies raft. Their guide was shouting something to motivate them and in here we both were shouting to win the battle. However that didn't last as we already were tired with all the fun we had in the journey. Hence we allowed them to pass by. The end was visible now. But the big task now was that we had to lift the raft on our head till their pick up vehicle. The raft reached the shore and we got down one by one. Initially we thought we had to just hold the handles on the sides of the raft. But that will only bring the raft out of water. Later we had to lift up on our shoulders to make sure it reaches the van. Inspite of being drained out totally we had to do this. We all lifted the raft and started walking in the upward direction as the road was steep. The outside guys leg slipped but some how he managed and escaped the fall. But Ajinkya couldn't and did a full Sashtang Namaskar. So after Kishan, Niki and Me now Ajinkya joined the elite group. We landed the raft near the pick up van and that was the official end of our journey. Niki paid the guide 2K as she was carrying the bag when we all carried the raft, and took our memory card.

Some were hungry and all were thirsty. Me and Manoj were searching our automan. There was too much crowd as all rafts had reached the end point. So there were pick up cars or autos for people plus pick up vans for rafts. After few minutes, we were able to trace him. So we went and took our seats. But we had to wait for the other 4 guys who had accompanied us while reaching the rafting point. So we were just relaxing for around the auto. The grass on the other side of the auto was too much luring for a photo session. So Manoj took out his phone and started clicking pictures. I was initially tired but later joined in for group sessions. Rahul took a video of himself while running and climbing the mountain. There were light drizzles but Manoj phone was water proof, atleast he says so. Niki was walking safely as there was too much chikal around. As the other guys came in, the auto started its journey back to our cottage. I am not sure in what position I was sitting in the auto, but one thing I was sure that I was sitting in the same position for the entire journey. This had resulted in serious bum pain for me. I remember one incident which happened at the Kolad Railway platform while we were waiting for our train. Just to relax I sat on the bench, and with triple speed as if 4-5 cylinders were attached, I came back on the standing position.

The tiring auto journey finally concluded in the cottage. Everyone was dead hungry. Kishan had initiated the task of transferring data from the memory card into Nikis phone. The cottage guy had dropped by twice telling us to come for lunch. 1-2 were still pending to freshen up so we were waiting for them. One last task for Kolad was pending. Manoj had an idea of preparing a time capsule, a small bottle which shall have something written in it about this trip which shall be worth reading after few years. The same shall be buried somewhere in Kolad. So Niki and me wrote a few lines with the names and date of this trip. After this we had our lunch. It was Sunday. Yet I preferred to have Veg as I had enough of Non Veg for the previous day and also the menu was repeated that which was served on the Saturday. Fortunately it wasn't raining much, only light drizzles. Our bags were packed already. So as soon as our lunch was done we started our check out procedure. While going towards our auto we did the burying task of our Kolad Time Capsule. It is buried under a tree somewhere closer to the cottage. I hope the tree remains there when anyone of us visits the place next time. The same automan brought us back to the station thus ending the Kolad trip. At station, Manoj finally took out his DSLR and clicked few pictures. The pics actually came out real good even when our faces were all drained out and dull.

PS: The ghost of Goa might not haunt us after this, but still we have scores to settle.
